MADE TO ORDER

The mistletoe bird plays an important role in the mistletoe plant's life cycle. Mistletoes are parasitic plants to Native Australian Eucalyptus trees, whose blossoms are highly nutritious to a wide range of wildlife. The fruit of the plant has one large seed which is covered with a sticky coating. When the Mistletoe bird eats the fruit, it sticks to the birds’ beak or bottom, causing it to adhere to a branch. The seed then rapidly germinates, sending a root into the host plant plumbing itself into the sap flow for life.

I have chosen to use these forms in a playful, theatrical way using soft pinks and yellows, alongside teal blues and olive greens. My hope was to create pieces that felt like they were made in Queensland.

Inspired by a bunch of flowers I bought from my local green grocer.

It is not the first time I have been inspired by the awesome flower of the Stenocarpus sinuatus or Firewheel tree that grows on my studio doorstep. This truly Australian Rainforest Tree is from the Protea Family. Hall Runners are such a wonderful size to make with whimsical designs.

This rug design was inspired by a piece of seaweed I found on the shores of Cylinder Beach on Stradbroke island. It is reflection on living life like a piece of flotsam jetsam seaweed, floating along freely with the ebbs and flows. It is this ability to go with the flow like a piece of seaweed in the ocean that help us to maintain our sense of self amidst external chaos. The Gypsy element represents freedom.

The Macadamia nut tree provides a multitude of shapes and forms to play with and is a well known Queensland Icon. My memories of this tree and its unyielding outer shell are from my childhood, growing up in an old Queenslander in Red Hill. We would gather the nuts and attempt to crack the resistant shells by placing them into gaps in the concrete and smashing them with a hammer.

Inspired by Astrid Andersen's (1936-2021) home in Canada, she was our Danish Viking Queen and her home reflected the colours of the 70's, and never changed.

Inspired by the colours I see on my visits to Stradbroke Island. The colours of the sea and the sky and the sand.

In complete contrast to most of my work where design plays a vital role, "Variation on a Stripey Theme" is a playful attempt to remove the design process from the piece. I wanted to make a piece that felt like it was not too precious to use on the floor.

Hall Runners are such a wonderful size to make with whimsical designs. Vintage Dahlias has a modern twist to the vintage theme. Combining the traditional pale/dusty pink background with the contemporary pink and orange is what makes this piece unique.

With this piece I was trying to create a rug that looked like it had been plucked out of the past. The colours are reminiscent of what I remember seeing as a child.
